Road to work

Visualization is the key to motivation, and motivation is the key to enhance some ones self confidence, and that is what gets them back to work.

Question: We want to raise the confidence of our candidates. They have been unemployed for a while now. We want them to have the tools and the mindset to solve the challenges they face. We want them to work with us to create a better future for themselves by getting them actively involved and commending them for their achievements. They need to believe they have what it takes to become a success story.

Solution: Motivation works best if you can visualize what it is you are trying to bring across. Especially if you are dealing with highly demoralized people they need to be
challenged step by step to build up their confidence. Visualization helps by creating a challenge system which allows them to gain confidence by the first easier steps, and then learn to master more difficult challenges. We created an online system where we visualized both progress and tasks that candidates needed to pass in order for them to aquire the necessary skill set become eligible for a job again.

The best way to motivate someone is to create the feeling of achievement.

Insights: If you will tell people what they need to do by using only words, it is sometime very hard to get hem to listen. It is the mental picture they created that prevents them from fully listening to what is told to them. But if you visualize the situation and the goals they have to achieve it becomes tangible. So we use visualization to trigger all sorts of behaviors and visualize all the challenges they have to face to make them less abstract and create an atmosphere of yes I can.

Using the insights: We created a platform for two groups of people. Firstly for the counselors. And secondly for the unemployed candidates. The counselors could use the system to evaluate and activate the candidates. They were able to customize the challenges to suit the unique needs of each and every candidate. The tool also provided help in internal communication. For the candidates we used visualization and autonomy, two elements from gamefication to give them the power to learn skills on their own terms providing them with resources to gain the confidence they needed to get back to the yes I can mindset. With visual stimuli we created an environment of positive reinforcement and feedback. The achievements and status visualization of a candidate where helpful in boosting the candidates self-confidence, and also gave great insights to counselors and possible future employers. Progress was not only visualized using status and challenges. Video and visual explanation where created to support some of the challenges. This would help the candidate realize that the challenge is not a mission impossible, but by taking the step by step approach they could do anything.

Creating the strategy, platform and idea was easy, fitting content that suited all the counsellors proved to be the real challenge.

The challenge was to get counsellors to see the platform as a basic project tool to work from. The challenges for the candidates needed to be abundant and specific for each specified group of users. This proved to be a real challenge since most of the content had to be created from scratch or re-used from alternate sources. The diversity of the candidates meant that the initial workload of generating content was much higher then expected, but in the end we have created a tool with a great toolset and possibilities to motivate unemployed candidates and get them back to work sooner.
